Topic: A Journey to Antarctica

My husband and I just completed our first audio slideshow for our recent journey to Antarctica. Here it is: http://www.uncorneredmarket.com/2010/04 … slideshow/

Feedback or advice on how to improve our audio slideshows is much appreciated as we hope to make audio slideshows a regular feature on our website.

Thanks!

Re: A Journey to Antarctica

Lots of nice photography in this piece, and it was incorporated well into the website.

Two possible suggestions. First, work on using natural sound. Your audio is 100% voiceover, which in my opinion is the second least effective use of audio (next to music that has nothing to do with the photos). I'd like to hear what Antarctica sounds like: the living quarters, the camaraderie with other visitors, the ice groaning and creaking, the wind blowing, the penguins doing whatever penguins do ... etc. You can also think of recording interviews with people: guides, visitors, scientists, or others. In this way, the audio conveys more of what I would experience on the trip.

The second suggestion is that some of the images are of themes or events that could be reinforced with additional photos. In particular the windswept bride with the veil. It's the only picture, and without listening to your explanation, I'd have no idea what was going on. But with one or two additional pictures showing me it's a wedding in Antarctica, I'd get the point visually. You also have just one image of the interior living quarters (the picture of the cupboard with Grape Nuts). This topic could use more images.

At over 7 minutes, the piece is longer than I would usually look at. This is due to the long voiceover, not because you have too many pictures. I think you could tighten the redundant images, flesh out the ideas with only one image, and trim the audio and get the whole package into 3-4 minutes. Any longer than that, and you might consider breaking it into chapters.

Re: A Journey to Antarctica

Kevin, thanks so much for your constructive feedback! Lots of ideas that we can work on for next time. We felt that 7 minutes was a bit long, but had a hard time cutting back on the narrative. We'll try to focus on the essentials next time and also add more photos that add variety and tell the story without the narrative.

Hopefully, you'll see some improvements with the next one we publish.

Cheers,
Audrey
