Topic: Non-flash for portable devices

I don't want to post anything taboo...so, first, let me state that I am a long-time satisfied Soundslides user and will continue to be...

That being said, what do you suggest I use to create simple image rotators for my website clients who want to be visible on iPhones and iPads and Blackberry devices which do not view Adobe Flash?

There is a similar discussion going on Flickr which uses Flash for its slideshows and I have looked into javascript and open source software like Mootools and Jquery but they require some heady programmer savvy.

Your video exporter to create a QuickTime .mov file works superbly but I'm guessing that embedding that on a webpage would take much more space and would not allow clickable images for links and SEO?

Here is an example of where I need it. I designed this webpage using a Soundslides show embedded as a banner:

Thanks for any suggestions,

Re: Non-flash for portable devices

The most recent versions of Soundslides and Soundslides Plus (1.9.4, released February 2011) include an optional shell called "html5_compatible." This displays the normal Flash-based player on computers and devices that have Flash installed (Mac, PC, Android phone or tablet, etc.), and an HTML 5-based player on all others (such as the iPad and iPhone). The HTML 5 player is not as sophisticated because HTML 5 is not as developed as Flash, but we have included as many features as the technology will allow. Here are the download links for the update if you do not already have it:

Soundslides Plus:
Mac OS X:

Soundslides:

Windows:

Once you have installed the update, you can open your project, click the "TEMPLATE" tab, then the "SHELL" tab, and select "html5_compatible." Then save and export your project and upload it to your web server as you normally would.

Additionally, the 1.9.5 betas (released April 2012) include an improved shell called "iOS_html5." Here are the download links for the 1.9.5 beta:

Soundslides:

Windows:

Both 1.9.4 and the 1.9.5 beta are free for all license holders.

Re: Non-flash for portable devices

This is great news, Jonathan. Thanks for the links. I already have the 1.9.4 version so I will check out the template for html5.

Do you recommend trying the beta version or could I encounter some bugs?

Re: Non-flash for portable devices

The latest beta seems to be bug-free (fingers crossed), and we hope to have an official 1.9.5 release soon.
